The Story Behind Billy Elliot
Billy Elliot is based on the critically acclaimed feature film. The movie's original creative team (director Stephen Daldry, choreographer Peter Darling and writer Lee Hall) help bring the musical to life. Elton John wrote what the New York Post calls "HIS BEST SCORE YET!" Billy Elliot opened as a musical on London's West End in 2005. The production opened on Broadway's Imperial Theater on November 13, 2008.
The musical takes place in Northern England in the mid-1980s during the coal miners' strike. Billy Elliot is a motherless 11-year-old boy who wants to give up boxing in favor of being a dancer. Billy begins secretly dancing instead of boxing. Part of the boxing gym is used by a ballet class. Billy's talent for dance is recognized by his teacher who encourages him to audition for the Royal Ballet School in London. When Billy's fater finds out, he forbids him to dance. His father eventually watches him dance and understands that ballet is Billy's passion and allows him to audition. He makes it into the school and begins the journey of fulfilling his dream. Billy eventually becomes the lead in Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake.
Billy Elliot has many layers besides Billy just becoming a dancer. His best friend, Michael, has to come to terms with his homosexuality. Also, Billy's father and brother choose different sides of the picket line during the miner's strike.
Billy Elliot was nominated for nine Laurence Olivier awards and won four of them. It also won the Evening Standard Award in 2005. In 2008, it won the best musical at the Sydney Theatre Awards. Billy Elliot received 10 Drama Desk Award Nominations in 2009, as well as 10 Outer Critics Circle Nominations.
