Carmen is a fantastic opera that has soaring arias and powerful tenors. Since the 1880s, it has been one of the world's most performed operas. It appears as number four on Opera America's list of the 20 most performed operas in North America. It is set in Seville, Spain in 1830. Carmen is a beautiful gypsy with a fiery temper. She seduces a soldier, Don Jose. He rejects his former lover and joins a gang of smugglers. He ends up murdering Carmen in a jealous rage when she turns from him to a bullfighter, Escamillo.

"Carmen is about sex, violence, and racism- and its corollary: freedom," says Olivier Award-winning director Richard Eyre. "It is one of the inalienably great works of art. It's sexy, in every sense. And I think it should be shocking." The opera has vivid characters and is full of hit tunes. It chooses to show the severe side of Spanish life rather than the picture-postcard view.
