The Story Behind Chicago The Musical

Chicago originally opened on June 3, 1975 at the 46th Street Theatre and ran for 936 performances before closing on August 27, 1977. It is Broadways sixth longest-running show. Chicago has won 6 Tony Awards, 2 Olivier Awards and a Grammy. The musical is based on a play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins.

The musical starts out with Velma Kelly welcoming the audience. She murdered her husband and her sister when she found them in bed together. Meanwhile, a chorus girl named Roxie Hart loses her lover, Fred Casely in a murder. She convinces her husband Amos that the victim was a burglar, but the police arrest her. She is sent to the women's block in Cook County Jail where Velma and other murderesses preside.

Velma is not happy to see Roxie because Roxy is stealing her limelight and her lawyer, Billy Flynn. Roxie becomes the toast of Chicago when Billy re-arranges her story for a sympathetic tabloid columnist. Roxie's headlines are soon replaced by the latest crime of passion and both Roxie and Velma realize they can only rely on themselves. Roxie decides to pretend she's pregnant to put herself back on the front page.

Amos proudly claims paternity. Billy gets Roxie her acquittal. Amos is happy that his wife is back and can't wait to be a father. Roxie finally admits to him that she isn't pregnant and Amos leaves her. She decides to team up with Velma in a new act where they are joined by the entire company for the grand "Finale".
