The Story Behind Radio City Christmas Spectacular
The Radio City Christmas Spectacular has been a Christmas tradition for over 75 years. The first version was performed in 1933 and ran for two weeks. The show was brought more up to date in 1979 and made into a 90-minute show. A 3-D film was created that still opens the show today. The first Radio City Christmas Spectacular that was performed outside of New York City was in Branson, Missouri in 1994.
The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is a spectacular show that will wow your entire family. It includes Santa flying high above the crowd, the legendary Rockettes and a beautiful living nativity. The show begins with an opening number called "Ring Out Those Bells" where the Radio City Rockettes perform. Santa Claus flies over the stage and the audience wear special glasses to watch a 3-D film.
The Rockettes go on to perform to "The Twelve Days of Christmas" and then a scene from The Nutcracker is performed. "The Parade of Wooden Soldiers" is performed by the Rockettes and the costumes are the same design by Vincente Minelli from the original 1933 production.
The Radio City Music Spectacular then goes on to have the Rockettes riding in a double decker tour bus over New York City. In Times Square, two boys named Ben and Patrick come up to Santa. Patrick tells Ben that it isn’t really Santa and he magically flies them off to the North Pole. The Rockettes perform "Ragdoll" and them Ben and Patrick magically return to Times Square where Patrick admits he does believe in Santa Claus.
The show then shows a short video history of Radio City Music Hall and the Rockettes. The Rockettes then perform "Let Christmas Shine" and wear costumes adorned with Swarovski Crystals. The "Living Nativity" is also from the original show and follows the Rockettes. The Radio City Music Spectacular closes with a singing of "Joy to the World."
