The Story Behind Hamlet

Hamlet is a tragedy by William Shakespeare. It is believed to have been written between 1599 and 1601. The play explores themes of treachery, revenge, incest and moral corruption. The play is set in Denmark and Prince Hamlet takes out revenge on his uncle Claudius who murdered Hamlet's father. Claudius takes the throne and marries Hamlet's mother, Gertrude. Hamlet was Shakespeare's longest play.

The play opens on a cold night at the Danish royal castle, Elsinore. A ghost appears to Hamlet and tells him that Claudius murdered his father by pouring poison in his ear. Hamlet is not sure if it is the truth or not. He decides to reenact a play of his father's death. When it comes to the point of the murder scene, Claudius quickly leaves the room. Hamlet sees this as proof of his uncle's guilt.

Claudius proposes a fencing match between Laertes and Hamlet. Laertes will fight with a poison-tipped sword. If the plan fails, Hamlet will be offered poison wine. After several rounds, Gertrude toasts Hamlet and accidentally drinks the poisoned wine. Laertes pierces Hamlet with the poisoned blade and Hamlet takes Laertes sword and wounds him with it. Gertrude falls over dying and announces that she was poisoned. Hamlet ends up killing Claudius.
