A Little Night Music is inspired by the film Smiles of a Summer Night. The musical follows the romantic lives of several couples and stars Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury. It includes the popular song "Send in the Clowns". The show takes place in Sweden at the turn of the 20th century. It starts with the characters waltzing. The aging Madame Armfeldt enters with her granddaughter, Fredrika. She tells the child that the summer night "smiles" three times: first on the young, second on fools, and third on the old.
