The Story Behind Mamma Mia!

Mamma Mia! is based on the songs form a Swedish pop/dance group, ABBA. It opened up in London on March 23, 1999. The producer, Judy Craymer did not know how the show would be received. But happily, she remembers, "The audience went wild. They were literally out of their seats and singing and dancing in the aisles - and they still are. Every night." Mamma Mia! has been nominated or won many awards including Olivier Awards, Tony Award, Drama Desk Awards and Theatre World Awards.

Mamma Mia! takes place on a Greek island where Sophie, a 20-year-old girl is getting ready to marry her fiancé, Sky. She has always dreamed of having her father walk her down the aisle, but she doesn't know who he is. She finds her mother's old diary and finds out that she had three intimate dates with three men (Sam Carmichael, Bill Anderson, and Harry Bright). Convinced that one of these three men is her father, she sends them all invitations to her wedding, but does not tell her mother, Donna.

All three men arrive the day before the wedding. She convinces them all not to let Donna know that they are there. Donna walks in just after Sophie walks out and discovers them. She runs to her room in tears.

Sophie thought she would immediately know who her father was once she saw him, but now she is more confused then ever. Sophie pulls each man aside separately to try to figure out who her father is. She first pulls aside Sam, but after he asks why he is there, she is overcome with guilt and goes and talks to Harry. Harry asks if Sophie's father is at the party and she tells him the truth. When she pulls Bill aside, she learns that he has an Aunt Sophia who left all her money to Donna's family. Donna lived with her when Sophie was a baby. They both realize that he is probably the father.

Sophie asks Bill to walk her down the aisle. He wants to discuss it with Donna, but Sophie convinces him not to. Afterwards, Sam pulls Sophie aside and tells her he knows he is her father and promises to walk her down the aisle. Harry then comes to her after Sam has left and is also convinced that he is her father and promises to walk her down the aisle.

Sophie decides that she wants Donna to walk her down the aisle. Donna tells everyone before the wedding that Sophie's father is present, though no one knows which one it is. Everyone involved agrees that it doesn't matter and they will all be "one-third of a father" to her. Harry admits that he is in a homosexual relationship. Sophie stops the ceremony and says she is not ready to get married. Sky agrees. Sam seizes his chance and proposes to Donna. They get married at the ceremony that was for Sophie and Sky. Sophie and Sky leave on a round-the-world tour.
