The Story Behind Mary Poppins
Mary Poppins is the award-winning Disney Theatrical musical based on the series of children's books and 1964 Academy Award winning hit film. Featured in the show is music by the Academy Award winning Sherman Brothers, along with additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. The Broadway production opened in November 2006 after the success of the West End production in December 2004 which won two Oliver Awards. The stage musical is a combination of elements from the classic film and books, with items that were omitted from the film being reintroduced in the show, such as the walking statue and the ladders rising to the stars.
The stage adaptation of Mary Poppins was done by Cameron Mackintosh, which premiered at the Bristol Hippodrome in September of 2004. Mary was played by Laura Michelle Kelly, who won the 2005 Oliver Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role. Mild controversy sparked when the producers banned children below the age of three from entering the theatre, deeming it too scary, and tagging the show as being "for children seven years and up" officially. This ban is still in effect. On March 17, 2005, Julie Andrews (who played Mary in the film), visited the show and appeared on stage during the curtain calls, where she talked of her memories in the film and praising the cast.
The success of the West End production led to the transferring of the musical to Broadway. The show debuted on November 16, 2006 at the New Amsterdam Theatre, and featured Gavin Lee reprising the role of Bert, whom he portrayed in the West End production. The Broadway production tried a few differing aspects, in that the "Jolly Holiday" sequence was staged in full technicolour instead of the gray tones of the London version. Also, in "Anything Can Happen", there was a change of the size of the umbrella Mary Poppins used to enter from the stage floor on, yet these changes were transferred back to the original West End production later.
The show has enjoyed many award nominations and various winners, including: Two 2005 Laurence Olivier Awards (Best Actress in a Musical-Laura Michelle Kelly, Best Theatre Choreographer-Matthew Bourne and Stephen Mear), Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Designer (Bob Crowley), 2005 Theatregoer's Choice Award for Best Designer (Bob Crowley), 2007 Tony Award for Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Bob Crowley), 2007 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical (Gavin Lee), and Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Set Design of a Musical (Bob Crowley).
