The Story Behind West Side Story

West Side Story is one of the greatest love stories of all time. The score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim is considered one of the best ever written. The musical is based on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Originally, it ran on Broadway starting in 1957 for 732 performances before going on tour. It began its current run on Broadway on March 19, 2009 at the Palace Theatre. West Side Story will have an onstage cast of 37 and 30 musicians in the orchestra pit.

"West Side Story transports the achingly beautiful tale of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the turbulent streets of the Upper West Side in 1950's New York City," according to the producers. "Two star-crossed lovers, Tony and Maria, find themselves caught between the rival street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds, the 'Jets' and the 'Sharks.' Their struggle to exist together in a world of violence, hate and prejudice is one of the most heart-breaking, relevant and innovative musical masterpieces of our time."

West Side Story is set in New York in the mid-1950s where there is a rivalry between two gangs. Tony is a former member of the Jets who hopes for a better life. Riff is a good friend who is still a part of the Jets. Maria works in a bridal shop and her family has picked out her future husband, Chino. Tony and Maria are drawn to each other at a neighborhood dance. They fall in love and kiss before her enraged brother, Bernardo, pulls them apart and makes her go home.

Tony goes to the bridal shop the next day to meet Maria and they dream of their wedding. Maria wants Tony to stop the fighting that is going on and he agrees. That night, a fight breaks out. Riff and Bernardo pull switchblades on one another. Tony pulls Riff back and Bernardo stabs him. In a fit of rage, Riff kills Bernardo. The two gangs go into a free-for-all fight.

Maria's is told by Chino that Tony killed Bernardo. Tony goes to see Maria and she continuously hits him until he finally calms her down and they plan to run away together. Chino sets out to kill Tony. Tony is told that Chino found out that he and Maria had been seeing each other and that he killed Maria. Tony goes to Chino and begs him to die, as well. Just as Tony sees Maria alive, Chino shoots him. Maria holds him as he dies. She grabs the gun wanting to kill because of her hatred. She collapses in grief and ends the cycle of violence between the two gangs.

The production garnered a Tony Award nomination for Best Musical in 1957, but the award went to The Music Man. It won a Tony Award in 1957 for Robbins' choreography. In 2009, West Side Story earned two Drama Desk Award Nominations, three Drama League Award Nominations and five Outer Circle Award Nominations.
